GREATER BRIDGEPORT SYMPHONY
COMPETITION FOR YOUNG INSTRUMENTALISTS
RULES
-
ELIGIBILITY: The Competition is open
to all instrumentalists who are residents of or study in Fairfield
or New Haven County, Connecticut, and are thirteen (13) through
eighteen (18) years of age. Applicants must have reached their
thirteenth birthday, but not have reached their nineteenth birthday
by the date of the Preliminary Competition.

MUSIC SELECTION: Contestants must be
prepared to perform a movement of a concerto plus a work of a
contrasting composer, period, style and tempo. Total performance
time for both pieces is limited to fifteen (15) minutes at the
Finalist Competition. At the Preliminary Competition your total
performance time will be twelve (12) minutes. Expect Judges
to interrupt contestants during his/her performance, if needed.
There is no penalty if stopped before completing a composition.
Judges do not need a copy of the music. Contestants must supply
their own accompanists.

PRELIMINARY COMPETITION: is
Saturday, January 31, 2009. Contestants will be notified of
his/her exact time of performance.
All contestants are required to
audition in person. No tapes, cds or videos accepted.
The Preliminary Competition is not open to the public.

FINALIST COMPETITION: is Sunday,
February 1, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. and is open to the public.
Finalists should arrive at 11:45 a.m. to pick lots to determine
performance time. Music performed for the Preliminary competition
must be performed for the Finalist Competition as well.

COMPETITION SITE: Both the
Preliminary and the Finalist Competitions will be held at the Arnold
Bernhard Arts & Humanities Center, University of Bridgeport, 84
Iranistan Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut.

DEADLINE: Applications must be
mailed, faxed or delivered to: The Greater Bridgeport Symphony, 446
University Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut 06604, Facsimile
203-367-0064 and received by Friday, January 2, 2009.
Recommendations must accompany the application.
Audition space is limited to the first 25 applicants.

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: Two (2)
letters of recommendation are required with the application. (They
are not needed if already on file from the previous year.) School
music teachers and/or private teachers may write recommendations.
Recommendation letters must be received with the application by the
deadline.

ENTRY FEE: A NON-REFUNDABLE entry
fee of $25.00 must be submitted with this application. Please make
checks payable to: Greater Bridgeport Symphony.

RECOMMENDED ATTIRE: Women: long
dress or skirt. Men: suit or sport jacket, dress shirt, tie.

AWARD DECISIONS: The Greater
Bridgeport Symphony and a committee of qualified judges will be the
jury for the competitions. Their decision will be final. If, in the
opinion of the jury, there are no outstanding prizewinners, the
monetary awards will be added to the competition prizes for the
following year.

PRIZE AWARDS: First prize: $400,
Second prize: $200, Third prize: $100. The first prizewinner will be
invited to audition for the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Music
Director, Gustav Meier. The first prizewinner will not be eligible
for subsequent competitions. The top prizewinners will also receive
an award certificate.

RELEASE: By signing the application
contestants agree to audio/video taping the Finals for
non-commercial broadcast and general promotional use by the Greater
Bridgeport Symphony.
